With ESX you can use two license type : License Server and Licens Host.
--> you must have license file (.lic) to activation.

Vmware has just released the free version VMware ESXi 3.5 update 2. You can try it without worrying about license. But if you want to test advanced features like HA you must use the licensed version. Contact me for some cool stuffs :D.

It's not just a matter of license file. To c.rack Vmware you must download a c.racked libraries for ESX, a c.racked version of VirtualCenter and a c.racked license key. For ESX, because the c.racked libraries is too big, I can't send it to you but you can find it in many warez site (phazeddl.com, mininova.org...). I also attach here the license file and c.rack for Virtual Center.
